Girl Scout Troop 353 Advance to the National Finals of the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC)
Congratulations to Maddie Emslie, Kara Chuang, Milan Guittierez, Hannah Kim, Vienna Murillo, Alexis Cordes, and Emily Guarin! With 5000 annual participants, TARC is the world’s largest student rocket contest. The 9th/10th grade girls of Girl Scout Troop 353, all former Oneonta Montessori students, have spent 7 months designing, building, and test-flying rockets to meet the challenge goals of hitting a precise altitude, landing within a specific flight time window, and returning two raw eggs (”the astronauts”). Their flights have placed them in the top 100 in the nation and will compete in the finals near Washington, DC on May 10, 2014.
In addition to their great competitive accomplishment, these girls will all complete their Girl Scout Gold Award this year, the highest honor a Senior Scout is eligible to receive. A Gold Award project must identify a community issue, involve community partners, have long-term benefits and sustainable support involving at least 80 hours of planning, leadership, and implementation. Maddie, Kara, Alexis, and Vienna have earned their awards and Hannah, Emily, and Milan are currently completing their Gold Awards.
